Dr. Rilwanu Lukman, member of the Supervisory Board of Dietsmann, passed away early this morning, 21 July, in Vienna.
Dr. Lukman first joined Dietsmann’s Supervisory Board in May 2007 after many years of service to his country and the petroleum industry. He served as Nigeria’s Federal Minister of Mines, Power and Steel from 1984 to 1985, as the Federal Minister of Petroleum Resources from 1986 to 1989, as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1990 and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) from 1993 to 1994. Dr. Lukman was also a Presidential Adviser on Petroleum and Energy Matters to the Federal Government of Nigeria and a former Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. He also served as the Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) from 1995 to 2000.
In December 2008 Dr. Lukman resigned from Dietsmann’s Supervisory Board to once again serve his country as the Nigerian Federal Minister of Petroleum Resources. He re-joined Dietsmann’s Supervisory Board in April 2011.
Dr. Lukman’s death is a great loss, in the first place to his family and close friends, but also to his country and to Dietsmann. He was a man of the utmost integrity and statesmanship, and deeply respected by everyone who had the privilege to know him. His knowledge, captivating personality and wise counsel will be sorely missed.
